"The 16 Sutras and 13 Sub-Sutras: Key Concepts in Vedic Mathematics"

Hi folks, As we all know that Vedic Maths is a system of mathematics that originates from the ancient Indian scriptures known as the Vedas, particularly the Atharvaveda. It was revived and systematized by Sri Bharati Krishna Tirthaji in the early 20th century. Vedic Maths is based on 16 Sutras (formulas) and 13 Sub-Sutras (sub-formulas), which provide simple, fast, and efficient methods to solve mathematical problems. These techniques can be applied to a variety of areas such as arithmetic, algebra, geometry and calculus.

The 16 Sutras (formulas) of Vedic Maths are concise and powerful techniques that can be applied to various mathematical operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and algebra. These Sutras provide shortcuts that simplify traditional methods and allow for faster calculations. Here’s a list of the 16 Sutras:

1. Nikhilam Navatashcaramam Dashatah               2. Ekadhikena Purvena

3. Urdhva-Tiryak Sutra                                            4. Paravartya Yojayet

5. Shunyam Saamyasamuccaye                            6. (Anurupye) Shunyamanyata

7. Sankalana-Vyavakalanabhyam                          8. Puranapuranabhyam

9. Chalana-Kalanabhyam                                      10. Yavadunam

11. Vyasti-Samashtiah                                          12. Shesanyankena Charamena

13. Sopaantyadvayamantyam                             14. Ekanyunena Purvena

15. Gunitasamuchyah                                           16. Gunakasamuchyah

There are some more tricks in Vedic maths known as sub-sutras or corollaries. They are derived from the main sutras and provide additional methods or shortcuts to solve problems faster and easier. There are 13 sub sutras.

1. Anurupyena                                            2. Sisyate Sesasamjnah

3. Adyamdyenantya-mantye-na                 4. Kevalaih Saptakam Gunyat

5. Vestanam                                               6. Yavadunam Tavadunam

7. Yavadunam Tavadunam Varganca Yojayet  8. Antyayordasakeiape

9. Antyayoreva                                            10. Samuccayagunitah

11. Lopanasthapanabhyam                        12. Vilokanam

13. Gunitasmuccayah Samuccayagunitah

"Rest assured, we will study all the formulas and sub-formulas in detail in upcoming blogs. Now, here are some of the features of Vedic Mathematics:"

Key Features of Vedic Maths:

  1. Speed and Simplicity: The main advantage of Vedic Maths is that it simplifies complex calculations and allows for quick mental math. It can be especially helpful in competitive exams, where speed is crucial.

  2. Mental Calculation: The methods encourage mental calculation rather than relying on paper and pencil, making it easier to solve problems on the go.

  3. Versatility: Vedic Maths methods are applicable to all levels of mathematics, from basic arithmetic to more advanced topics like algebra and calculus.

  4. Intuitive: The techniques are designed to be intuitive, making them easier to learn and apply than traditional methods.

Applications:

Vedic Maths can be used in:

  • Speed calculations: For competitive exams like CAT, NEET, UPSC, GPAT and others examinations.
  • Mental math: To improve your ability to perform calculations without a calculator.
  • Daily life: To solve basic arithmetic problems quickly and efficiently.

Overall, Vedic Maths is not just about faster calculations but also about developing a deeper understanding of numbers and enhancing cognitive abilities.
